History repeats itself

If you substitute “American” for “German” in this quote, I think it makes for interesting commentary on the current state of our country:

“We went wrong when we began to dream the dream of a special German mission, as though the German character could cure the world. As a result we prepared the way for the unrestricted use of political power and set our nation on God’s throne – It was disastrous that we began to ground our state internally on a strong government alone, and externally only on the development of military power.”

(By Martin Dibelius, a former bishop of Berlin, as quoted in Judaism: Between Yesterday and Tomorrow, by Hans Küng. Dibelius was offering an explanation for why the German people supported Hitler so enthusiastically.)

  1. Um, yeah. It’s uncanny.

  2. Yeah, it’s disturbing, isn’t it?

Will you be attending the Amazon Slam tonight?

  3. *sigh* Obviously (now) not…I have to get back in the habit of going! 🙂

  4. Missed you last night…it was a great line up. Make sure you are signed up for the mailing list – the venue will be changing and there may be a hiatus…
