Poem by Ariana Kramer

This is indeed “a time for distance” but I’m having a hard time distancing right now. I’m taking this very personally. It does not feel safe to be me in the world right now. Reading this poem soothes me a little; I just wish I could keep it in my head.

Ariana Kramer, 11/3/04, Portland, Oregon

Do not marry yourself to this.
Do not marry yourself
to the slaughter of Iraqi civilians.
Do not marry yourself
to the disenfranchisement of voters.
Do not marry yourself
to the dissolution of the commons,
the loss of clean air and forests,
education that teaches
children to measure worth
by production.
Do not marry yourself
to the politics of pride
and arrogance.
Do not wed yourself to the results
of this election.
This is a time for distance.
This is a time for the spirit
of independence to rise up.
Do not marry yourself
to popular opinion or
electoral votes.
Do not marry yourself
to media manipulation.
Do not wed yourself
to love defined
by ignorance,
misunderstanding
and hatred.
This is not a time for union.
We are a divided nation.
Concede nothing.
Let freedom,
justice,
liberty
and life
stand
alone.
