Too bad for you…

…if you live in Ashland or Woburn, MA. Turns out that the Nyanza chemical and dye company in their backyards has been releasing toxic chemicals into the environment which cause cancer. Oops, so sorry. Thanks for playing:

“The study involved extensive interviews with 1,387 current and former Ashland residents who were children between 1965 and 1985, and 73 participants reported having been diagnosed with some type of cancer.” (Boston Globe, 4/26/06)

That’s over 5%, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you consider how long it takes cancer to show up in the body, and how relatively small a sample size that is, it’s alarming. Also, if you factor that this study was only looking at Ashland residents, but there is indication that people in Woburn, maybe Hopkinton, etc, have been affected as well, so that increases the impact. The chemicals were found in contaminated water in these areas, and water doesn’t necessarily stop for city boundaries, so we don’t know the full extent of the impact.

But we don’t need any environmental regulations limiting corporations. No, no, not at all. If you happen to live in an area with contaminated water, too bad. We’ll tell you about it 20 years later.
