It’s good news but why do I still feel hopeless?

I am happy that Deval Patrick won. It is historic and exciting to have Massachusetts elect its first Black governor, and it is exciting to have Democrats authoritatively take back control of this state.

I am excited that the Dems have also won the House, and that Nancy Pelosi will likely be the first female Speaker of the House.

But why do I still feel discouraged and depressed about the state of American politics? Is it just that more states voted to become slave states by writing discrimination into their constitution? Is it that voters consistently vote against their own interest, time and time again, and demonstrate their inability to make educated decisions at the polls? Is it that the whole system is so saturated with money that it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, the goal once they win is simply to preserve their power?

I should be happier right now. I should be. This is more good news than we’ve had since 2000.

Maybe I’m just tired.
