Obscure Treasures Meme

I’m making up another meme.

What are five obscure gems about which you think people should know?

1. Paul’s Boutique by the Beastie Boys – The greatest Beastie Boys album of all time
2. Guayaki Yerba Mate – Tasty, delicious, and gives you an extra oomph without giving you caffeine headaches.
3. “Drug Ballad” by Eminem – The best Eminem song ever. And one of the best descriptions of addiction in any medium.
4. Brenda Kahn is the greatest folk singer no one has ever heard of.
5. Leaving Normal and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid are the greatest movies no one has ever seen.

  1. I’m gonna have to argue the last portion of your statement in #4, being one of the lucky folks who actually owns a copy of Epiphany in Brooklyn. “I Don’t Sleep, I Drink Coffee Instead,” “Mint Juleps and Needles” and “Sleepwalking” were part of my personal myth-cycle for years, it seems… 🙂

  2. Also, Paul’s Boutique is hardly obscure.

  3. 1. Feargal Sharkey: Ex-Undertones lead singer, their one-hit “Teenage Kicks” is usually all people know of Feargal. But he also put a great solo album in the early 80’s, produced by Dave (“The Eurythmics”) Stewart and including Annie Lennox and Maria McKee as backup singers. Minor hit with “A Good Heart Is Hard To Find”.

    2. Round Top Ice Cream: located in Damariscotta,ME, this was the first ice cream place I went where you could see them make it and see the cows they got the milk from. Still good today, still my favorite.

    3. Ivor Cutler- Mad Scottsman, he made weird poems and stories set to hand-pumped harmonium music. Featured in the Beatle’s “Magical Mystery Tour. He’s just nifty in so many ways. Here’s a clip of him performing his song “Shoplifters” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LddPuhzt0F4

    4. “Jake Speed”- a way-too unkown movie from the 80’s that put a neat-o spin on pulp heroes like Doc Savage, etc. Many, many fine lines and a quirky but lovable hero. The music? Very 80s…

    5. This is one is so obscure, there aren’t even words to describe it in th English Language. So instead, imagine me doing an interpretive dance.

  4. Well, it isn’t to people who know the Beastie Boys. But it’s the album that has sold the fewest copies, and that people outside of B-Boys fans are rarely familiar with at all.

  6. Yay! Someone else who knows Brenda. But she’s pretty obscure. Epiphany is one of the best folk albums ever. But her earlier one Goldfish Don’t Talk Back also rocks, and she’s done several since then which are also strong.
