Bishop Gene Robinson is awesome

I am so happy Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson is also offering a prayer at Obama’s inauguration, and not just because he’s openly gay and therefore offers a good counterbalance to Rick Warren.  And not just because Obama has been reportedly planning to have Robinson long before the Warren controversy happened.

Really, I am so happy because Bishop Robinson may be the last Christian leader in this country who understands the concept of separation of church and state:

Bishop Robinson said he had been reading inaugural prayers through history and was “horrified” at how “specifically and aggressively Christian they were.”

“I am very clear,” he said, “that this will not be a Christian prayer, and I won’t be quoting Scripture or anything like that. The texts that I hold as sacred are not sacred texts for all Americans, and I want all people to feel that this is their prayer.”  (New York Times, January 12, 2009)

Because this is at the heart of the much deeper rot that threatens to destroy this country, if more leaders don’t figure it out.  How many empires have broken apart because of unchecked imperialism and religious differences?  Well, pretty much all of them, I think.

  1. What a great quote you found: “… I want all people to feel that this is their prayer.” Beautiful. We should have him over for dinner.
