Open Letter to Parents

Love your children.

Love them unconditionally. No, I really mean it. I know it’s not always easy. I know there are so many reasons why people become parents and it’s impossible not to have expectations of what your kids will be and what you hope they will do and become with their lives. I know. I have those same dreams and I’m not even a parent yet.

But the damage is incalculable.

The damage done by parents whose anger at their child for not looking like the kind of boy they always wanted, for not dressing like the girl they always wanted, for not falling in love with the kind of man or woman you always wanted for a son or daughter in law . For choosing not to marry, for choosing not to give you grandchildren. For choosing to change their gender, for choosing to vote Republican. For becoming Jewish, for becoming and evangelical Christian, for becoming Buddhist. For running for office, for not running for office. For being an artist, for not being an artist.

The damage is incalculable. The damage piles up in the offices of therapists, in bars, in heroin-filled syringes. The damage clogs arteries and causes your children to choke on their own vomit while they force themselves to throw up.

Love your children. Love them for who they are, not who you want them to be, not for what you think they are. Don’t have children if you aren’t capable of doing this. Because the damage is incalculable for those children who don’t grow up with this. And don’t we have enough damaged adults walking around already?
