Day 232

Another lapse.

I don’t have many white people in my life who make the argument about how race is a meaningless concept because genetically our differences are marginal.  But I got to witness that argument in Facebook (where else?) from an acquaintance.

He’s not wrong, technically.  (Of course he’s a he.  He’s also white.) But when that lived experience of race has led to centuries of exploitation and oppression (the most egregious examples being slavery, the Holocaust, the Native American genocide) and continues to lead to less overt but no less damaging acts of racism and oppression  – well, sitting back and talking about how race is meaningless seems naive at best. And if you’re doing so from a position of privilege, well, it just makes you look like an asshole.
