NaPoWriMo 2019, Day 3

•April 4, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Today, I’d like to challenge you to similarly write something that involves a story or action that unfolds over an appreciable length of time. Perhaps, as you do, you can focus on imagery, or sound, or emotional content (or all three!)

…nah, I got nothing.

Visiting Ellis Island

•February 20, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Went to see the Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island. Perhaps it was known to everyone else, but I didn’t realize Ellis Island was a detention center. And not unlike our present day detention camps, except better organized and more transparent. Many of the inhumane things done at the border now are not new, they are a return to some of the worst policies of our country’s history.

Can you imagine traveling by boat for a month from a country you may not be able to go back to, only to live in a detention center for months because you were deemed “likely to be dependents on aid”? They marked the immigrants in chalk and began eyeballing them for ailments as soon as they walked up the steps.

This is an intelligence test that determined if you were mentally fit enough to come in. I took the simulation and got denied several times. Possibly because I “sing or talk to myself.”
